Regulation, Good Practice and Censorship

The government is trying to bring in legislation against certain social medias despite the majority of them already having their own guidelines and regulations.
There are currently no standard regulations or regulatory bodies to monitor social media.
However, private businesses cannot break the Data Protection Act (by, for example, publishing clients' personal details without personal information).
China block social medias like Twitter and Facebook.
Instead they use social media sites such as Sina Weibo (a microblogging website similar to that of blogger or Facebook) or WeChat (similar to Messenger or Snapchat) both of which are on closed networks on which the government can censor what the citizens can see.

Cambridge Analytica
An employee of Facebook revealed that they sold 50 million users names and data to third party companies so they could target them with fake news. This was later revealed to be 87 million and in response, Mark Zuckerberg was told to appear in front of congress.

Hate Speech
You are not allowed to say anything negative about people based on their:
Religion
Race
Country
Gender
Sexuality

Terrorist attacks
Terrorists upload images and messages on social media. This is taken down when reported but by that time its already too late as its been shared.

Self Regulation
Whether professionally or privately, users are advised to comply with the law through self-regulation.
This means they should have an awareness of what is, and what is not, illegal, and act accordingly.

Justine Sacco got fired for tweeting "Going to Africa. Hope I don't get AIDS. Just Kidding. I'm white!"
Hashtag HasJustineLandedYet started trending worldwide whilst she was on a plane. By the time her plane landed, she lost her job, she was on every news station internationally and her life was over.

  1. You could maybe expand a little on China and North Korea, and the ways in which censorship works in those countries. I think both make fascinating reading.
